"my soul"
Wordplay
Act 4,
Scene 5
Lines 59-64

An explanation of the phrase “my soul” in Act 4, Scene 5 of myShakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Capulet

Despised, distressèd, hated, martyred, killed!
Uncomfortable Time, why cam'st thou now
To murder, murder our solemnity?
O child! O child! My soul, and not my child!
Dead art thou! Alack! My child is dead;
And with my child my joys are burièd.

Juliet was everything to Capulet; she was his soul. She was also his only — sole — child. She is no longer his child, as she is no longer.
