"Am I come near ye now"
Proverb
Act 1,
Scene 5
Lines 18-19

A proverb meaning to touch on a sensitive subject explained in myShakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Act 1, Scene 5.

Capulet

Will now deny to dance? She that makes dainty,
She I'll swear hath corns. Am I come near ye now?

The proverbial expression, “to come near someone,” means to touch on a sensitive subject. Corns are deep, ugly calluses on the toes caused ill-fitting shoes. They are sensitive in both meanings of the word: they can be very painful, and they can be very embarrassing.
