"And too soon marr'd are those so early made"
Proverbs
Act 1,
Scene 2
Lines 12-16

The use of two proverbs describing marriage as either bringing happiness or sadness in myShakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Act 1, Scene 2.

Paris

Younger than she are happy mothers made.

Capulet

And too soon marred are those so early made.
The earth hath swallowed all my hopes but she;
She's the hopeful lady of my earth.
But woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart.

In disagreeing with Paris’ argument that girls even younger than Juliet have made happy mothers, Capulet puts a clever spin on two proverbial expressions. The first one, “Marriage will either make you or mar (ruin) you,” implies that marriage brings either happiness or sadness, and it’s hard to predict which will occur. The second proverb is even less enthusiastic about marriage: “Marrying is marring.” In other words, marrying ruins your life.
