A discussion of the difference between friars and monks in myShakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Act 2, Scene 2.

A Friar is a member of one of several Catholic religious orders. In some ways friars are like monks – for example, they both take vows of poverty and chastity – but in other ways they are very different. Monks retreat from society and live an ascetic life of religious devotion in a self-sustaining monastery, whereas a friar lives out in society and is devoted to providing services to his community.
