Taming of the Shrew

[Enter Petruchio, Katherina, and Hortensio]

Petruchio

Come on, in God’s name, let’s keep going towards our father’s house. Good Lord, the moon shines so bright and beautifully!

Katherina

The moon? You mean the sun. There’s no moonlight now.

Petruchio

I say it is the moon that shines so bright.

Katherina

I know it is the sun that shines so bright.

[Enter Tranio as Lucentio, and the Merchant, dressed like Vincentio]

Tranio

Sir, this is the house. Would you like me to knock?

Merchant

Yes, of course. If I’m not wrong, Sir Baptista may remember me from almost twenty years ago, when we were both staying at the Pegasus in Genoa.

Tranio

That’s okay. Just play your part, no matter what, with the seriousness of a father.

[Enter Tranio as Lucentio and Hortensio as Litio]

Tranio

Litio, my friend, is it possible that Bianca likes anyone more than me, Lucentio? If she’s just leading me on, she’s doing it very well.

Hortensio

To convince you of what I’ve said before, just watch the way this man teaches her.

[They stand aside. Enter Bianca, and Lucentio as Cambio]

Lucentio

Now, did you learn from what you’ve been reading?

Grumio

Curse all worn-out horses, all crazy masters, all dirty roads! Has anyone ever been as beaten-up as I am? So defiled? So weary? I was sent ahead to make a fire, and Katherina and Petruchio will come along later to warm up. Now, if I weren’t so small and easy to heat up, my lips would freeze to my teeth, my tongue to the roof of my mouth, and my heart in my belly before I found a fire to thaw me. But as I make this fire, I’ll warm myself up. In this weather, a bigger man than I am would freeze. Hey, Curtis!

[Enter Baptista, Gremio, Tranio as Lucentio, Katherina, Bianca, Lucentio as Cambio, and attendants]

Baptista

[To Tranio] Signor Lucentio, it’s the day of Katherina and Petruchio’s wedding. But I haven’t heard from my son-in-law. What will people think? What an embarrassment it’ll be, to have the groom missing when the priest arrives to hold the wedding ceremony! Lucentio, what do you say about our shame?

Katherina

[Enter Lucentio as Cambio, Hortensio as Litio, and Bianca]

Lucentio

Hold on, fiddler. You’re too eager. Did you already forget how her sister Katherina thanked you last time?

Hortensio

You quarrelsome teacher. Bianca is the queen of heavenly harmony. Let me go first, and once we’ve had a music lesson for an hour, you can lecture her for the same amount of time.

[Enter Katherina, and Bianca (with her hands tied)]

Bianca

Good sister, don’t do this to me—or to yourself. Don’t treat me like a slave. If you want my clothes, just untie me and I’ll take them off myself. You can have them all, down to my slip. I’ll do what you ask. I know to obey my elders.

Katherina

In that case, here’s what I ask: who do you like best of all your suitors? Tell the truth.

[Enter Petruchio and his man Grumio]

Petruchio

I’m leaving Verona for a little while, to see my friends in Padua. I especially want to visit my best friend Hortensio — and I think this is his house! Here it is, Grumio, knock.

Grumio

Knock, sir? Whom should I “knock”? Has someone offended you?

Petruchio

Idiot! I’m telling you to knock for me, here.
