Character Interview: Ralph and Davina
Act 3,
Scene 3

Ralph and Davina take stock of the plot so far in Act 3, Scene 3 of myShakespeare's Macbeth.

DAVINA: Well, Ralph, it's act 3, scene 3, and it looks like we have some bad news to report.

RALPH: Though, I guess we knew it was coming. This is about Banquo, I assume.

DAVINA: That's right. As our audience will remember, he and his son, Fleance, were going horseback riding before the big banquet. But we also learned that Macbeth recruited some murderers to kill Banquo and his son while they were out. And when this scene starts, we find three murderers on stage.

RALPH: Wait, did you say three murderers? I just thought there were the just those two guys that he was talking into doing this.

DAVINA: You know what? I think you're right. Yep. Good catch, Ralph. In fact, the two who were recruited by Macbeth asked the third one who he is, and he just tells them Macbeth sent him.

RALPH: So maybe Macbeth didn't totally trust these two.

DAVINA: I guess not. Though, it seems a little weird, like who is this guy?

RALPH: Yeah, I guess we'll never know for sure, but they get the job done.

DAVINA: Well, okay, let's see. Banquo and Fleance do indeed return from their ride and are making the walk back to the palace from where they leave their horses. That's when the murderers attack.

RALPH: And Banquo's definitely outnumbered, so I guess we know what happens.

DAVINA: Yes, they managed to kill Banquo. Oh, dear. It's quite gruesome, in fact. And let's see—in all of the commotion, his son, Fleance escapes.

RALPH: Oh, wow. Fleance escapes. Nice. But wait, that's kind of a big deal. I mean, Macbeth knows that he's got to kill Fleance if he wants to prove the witch is wrong.

DAVINA: And the murderers know they've screwed up, but they decide to go tell Macbeth that at least they killed Banquo.

RALPH: Yikes. I'm not sure he's going to be happy with one out of two.

DAVINA: Probably not.

RALPH: I guess we'll soon find out. Thanks, Davina.

DAVINA: Thank you, Ralph.

RALPH: Is that it? Are we cutting?

DAVINA: Yeah, that's cut.

RALPH: Boy, any theory on who that third murderer could be?

DAVINA: No idea, Ralph. I guess it'll have to remain a mystery.

RALPH: Yeah, I know some people think that it's Macbeth in disguise, but I also read somewhere that it might be Lady Macbeth. Wild, huh?

DAVINA: Ask me again after lunch.
