"gentle"
Wordplay
Act 1,
Scene 6
Lines 1-3a

An explanation of the wordplay on “gentle” in Act 1, Scene 6 of myShakespeare’s Macbeth.

[Before Macbeth's castle, flutes and torches. Enter Duncan, Malcolm, Donalbain, Banquo, Lennox, Macduff, Ross, Angus, and Attendants.]

Duncan

This castle hath a pleasant seat; the air
Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself
Unto our gentle senses.

Banquo

[Enter Lady Macbeth]

Duncan

Lady Macbeth

Duncan

Lady Macbeth

Duncan

[Duncan gives Lady Macbeth a kiss. All exit]

Duncan’s wordplay can be read two ways:

  • Gentle can mean noble, and the king is, of course, of noble blood.
  • But it can also mean tender, as in, Duncan is a sensitive, compassionate king.
