"things forgotten"
Wordplay
Act 1,
Scene 3
Lines 151-152

An explanation of the double meaning in “things forgotten” in Act 1, Scene 3 of myShakespeare’s Macbeth.

Banquo

Worthy Macbeth, we stay upon your leisure.

Macbeth

Give me your favor; my dull brain was wrought

Macbeth’s words have a double meaning, and could be read two possible ways:

  • His “dull brain” was trying to remember “things forgotten”
  • He was upset, “wrought,” by the reminder of something he thought he had put out of his mind.
