Three witches enter the scene with a creepy fanfare of thunder and lightning. The first witch asks when they’ll all three meet again, and the second and third agree to meet on the heath after “the battle’s lost and won," but before sunset. It turns out they’ll have another in the party: none other than Macbeth.
First Witch
When shall the three of us meet again? Will there be thunder, lightning, or rain?
Second Witch
We’ll meet when the fighting is over, when the battle’s been lost by one side, and won by the other.
Third Witch
That’ll be before sunset.
First Witch
Where will we meet?
Second Witch
In the open field.
Third Witch
Where we’ll meet Macbeth.
First Witch
I’m coming, Graymalkin!
Second Witch
And Paddock’s calling me.
Third Witch
I’m coming!
All
What’s good is bad, and what’s bad is good. Come, let’s fly through this fog and filthy air.
