Act Introduction,
Scene 1
Lines 76-85

An explanation of the reference to Soto in Introduction 1 of myShakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Lord

Now, fellows, you are welcome.

Players

We thank your honor.

Lord

Do you intend to stay with me tonight?

First Player

So please your lordship to accept our duty.

Lord

With all my heart. This fellow I remember
Since once he played a farmer's eldest son;
'Twas where you wooed the gentlewoman so well.
I have forgot your name; but sure that part
Was aptly fitted and naturally performed.

Second Player

I think 'twas Soto that your honor means.

This is a little inside joke by Shakespeare. When The Taming of the Shrew was first performed, the actor playing the character to whom the Lord is speaking had recently performed the role of Soto in another play performed by Shakespeare’s company.
