“That's my office … Spoke like an officer”
Wordplay
Act 5,
Scene 2
Lines 33-37

An explanation of Petruchio’s sexual innuendo in Act 5, Scene 2 of myShakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Petruchio

To her, Kate!

Hortensio

To her, widow!

Petruchio

A hundred marks, my Kate does put her down.

Hortensio

That's my office.

Petruchio

Spoke like an officer — ha' to thee, lad!

Petruchio and Hortensio continue their light hearted banter. Picking up on Petruchio’s phrase “put her down,” Hortensio replies with a sexual innuendo: it’s his job (office) to put the widow down, i.e. get her into bed. Petruchio extends the innuendo while punning on “office”: Hortensio sounds like a police officer enforcing a husband’s marital rights.
