An explanation of the word "dotard" in Act 5, Scene 1 of myShakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew

Gremio

Then thou wert best say that I am not Lucentio.

Baptista

Yes, I know thee to be Signor Lucentio.

A dotard is an elderly person who’s a bit senile, dotty. It comes from the old Germanic word for taking a nap (a stereotypical habit of old folks). If someone today accuses you of “doting” on someone, they mean that you’re bestowing an excessive amount of love on that person because you’re infatuated — which could be seen as just another form of craziness (dottiness).
