You are here

Act 5,
Scene 1
Modern English:
[Gremio enters alone and stands aside. Then Biondello, Lucentio (no longer in disguise), and Bianca enter.]

Biondello

Quietly and quickly, sir; the priest is ready.

Lucentio

I’m coming, Biondello. But they might need you at home, so leave us.

[Exit Lucentio and Bianca]

Biondello

No, I swear I’ll make sure you’re safely married first, and then come back to my master’s as soon as I can.

[Exit]

Gremio

I’m amazed Cambio still hasn’t come.

[Enter Petruchio, Katherina, Vincentio, and Grumio, with attendants]

Petruchio

Sir, here’s the door. This is Lucentio’s house. My father’s is closer to the marketplace. I have to go there and leave you here, sir.

Vincentio

No, first you should come in and have a drink before you go. I order you to let me welcome you here. And there’s probably some food and drink being prepared.

[He knocks]

Gremio

They’re busy inside; you’d better knock louder.

[Merchant (as Vincentio) looks out of the window]

Merchant

Who is that who knocks like he’s trying to break down the gate?

Vincentio

Is Signor Lucentio inside, sir?

Merchant

He’s inside, sir, but not available to speak.

Vincentio

What if someone brings him a hundred pounds or two, to enjoy ourselves inside?

Merchant

Keep your hundred pounds to yourself. He won’t need them, as long as I’m alive.

Petruchio

See, I told you your son was well-liked in Padua. Do you hear, sir? Setting aside pointless details, please, tell Signor Lucentio that his father has come from Pisa, and is here at the door to speak with him.

Merchant

You’re lying. His father has come from Padua already, and is here looking out the window.

Vincentio

Are you his father?

Merchant

Yes sir. That’s what his mother says, if I can believe her.

Petruchio

[To Vincentio] What is the meaning of this, gentleman? This is downright trickery, taking another man’s name.

Merchant

Get that villain! I think he’s trying to cheat someone in this city, pretending to be me.

[Enter Biondello]

Biondello

[Aside] I saw Bianca and Lucentio go into the church together. May God give them a safe journey. But who’s here? My old master Vincentio. Now we’re undone, and our plan has come to nothing.

Vincentio

Come here, you criminal.

Biondello

Do I have a choice, sir?

Vincentio

Come here, you rogue. What, have you forgotten me?

Biondello

Forgotten you? No, sir, I could not forget you, since I have never seen you before.

Vincentio

What, you notorious villain, you’ve never seen your master’s father, Vincentio?

Biondello

My great old master? Yes, of course, sir. He’s right here, looking out of the window.

Vincentio

Is that so?

[He beats Biondello]

Biondello

Help, help, help! He’s a madman, he’ll murder me!

[Exit Biondello]

Merchant

Help, son! Help, Signor Baptista!

[He leaves the window]

Petruchio

Come on, Kate, let’s stand aside and see the end of this conflict.

[Enter Merchant from the house, with Servants; Baptista, and Tranio as Lucentio]

Tranio

Sir, who are you that you think you can beat my servant?

Vincentio

Who am I, sir! No, who are you, sir? Oh immortal gods! Oh you villain! A silk jacket? Velvet tights? A red cloak? And a tall hat? Oh no, I’m ruined! I’m ruined! While I stay frugal at home, my son and my servant spend everything at the university.

Tranio

Hey, What’s the matter?

Baptista

What, is the man a lunatic?

Tranio

Sir, you’re dressed like a reasonable old gentleman, but your words suggest you are a madman. Why, sir, what’s it to you if I wear pearls and gold? Thanks to my good father, I can afford it.

Vincentio

Your father! You villain, your father is a sail-maker in Bergamo.

Baptista

You are mistaken, sir. You are mistaken, sir. Can I ask, what do you think is his name?

Vincentio

His name? As if I didn’t know his name! I’ve brought him up since he was three years old. his name is Tranio.

Merchant

Get away, you madman! His name is Lucentio and he is my only son, and heir to my lands — me, Signor Vincentio.

Vincentio

Lucentio! Oh no, he’s murdered his master! Arrest him, I ask you, in the duke’s name! Oh, my son, my son! Tell me, you villain, where is my son Lucentio?

Tranio

Someone get an officer.

[Enter an Officer]

Carry this crazy fool to the jail. Father Baptista, I ask that you prepare him for trial.

Vincentio

Carry me to jail?

Gremio

Wait, officer. He’s not going to prison.

Baptista

Don’t talk, Signor Gremio. I say he’s going to prison.

Gremio

Listen, Signor Baptista, so they don’t make a fool of you: I swear this is the right Vincentio.

Merchant

Swear, if you dare!

Gremio

Well, I don’t dare to swear it...

Tranio

Then at least you’d better say that I’m not Lucentio.

Gremio

No, I know you’re Signor Lucentio.

Baptista

Away with this old fool! To jail with him!

[Enter Biondello, Lucentio, and Bianca]

Vincentio

That a complete stranger should be dragged around and abused like this! Oh monstrous villain!

Biondello

Oh no! There he is — we’re ruined. Deny him, renounce him, or else it’s all wrecked.

[Exit Biondello, Tranio, and Merchant, as fast as they can]

Lucentio

[Kneeling] Forgive me, sweet father.

Vincentio

Does my sweet son live?

Bianca

Forgive me, dear father.

Baptista

How have you offended anyone? And where is Lucentio?

Lucentio

Here’s Lucentio — the real son of the real Vincentio — who has made your daughter mine by marriage, while these false impersonations tricked your eyes.

Gremio

This is a conspiracy — here’s the proof — designed to deceive us all.

Vincentio

Where is that damn villain Tranio, who stood up to me and lied to me about this?

Baptista

Wait, tell me — this isn’t Cambio?

Bianca

Cambio has changed into Lucentio.

Lucentio

Love performed these miracles. Bianca’s love made me switch places with Tranio, while he pretended to be me in town. And I have gladly finally arrived to the the bliss I hoped for. I forced Tranio to do what he did; forgive him, sweet father, for my sake.

Vincentio

I’ll slit the nose of the villain who would have sent me to jail!

Baptista

[To Lucentio] What, sir? Have you married my daughter without asking for my blessing?

Vincentio

Don’t worry, Baptista. We’ll do whatever you want. Relax. But I’m going inside to get my revenge for this mistreatment.

[Exit Vincentio]

Baptista

Me too, to figure out how far this foolishness has gone.

[Exit Baptista]

Lucentio

Don’t look pale, Bianca. Your father will be happy.

[Exit Lucentio and Bianca]

Gremio

My goose is cooked, and I’m out of luck. But I’ll go in with the rest, hoping for nothing but a share of the feast.

[Exit Grumio]

Katherina

Husband, let’s follow, to see how this commotion ends.

Petruchio

First kiss me, Kate, and then we will.

Katherina

What, in the middle of the street?

Petruchio

What, are you ashamed of me?

Katherina

No, sir, God forbid! But I’m ashamed to kiss.

Petruchio

Well then, let’s go back home. [To Grumio] Come on, let’s go.

Katherina

No, I will give you a kiss, but please, my love, let’s stay here in Padua.

Petruchio

Isn’t this great? Come, my sweet Kate. Better late than never, for it’s never too late.

[Exit]
