“Padua affords nothing but what is kind”
Wordplay
Act 5,
Scene 2
Lines 14-15

An explanation of the wordplay on “kind” in Act 5, Scene 2 of myShakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Petruchio

Padua affords nothing but what is kind.

Hortensio

For both our sakes, I would that word were true.

Hortensio’s making a little joke. Since both his and Petruchio’s wives are from Padua, it would be good for them if everything Padua produces is “kind.”
