Act 5,
Scene 2
Lines 1-2

A discussion of Hamlet’s attitude toward Ophelia’s death in Act 5, Scene 2 of myShakespeare’s Hamlet.

[Enter Hamlet and Horatio in conversation.]

Hamlet

So much for this, sir. Now, let me see — the other.
You do remember all the circumstance?

In the previous scene, Hamlet has boasted of his love for Ophelia, saying that his grief far outweighs that of Laertes. Yet moments later, Hamlet seems to have forgotten all about Ophelia’s death. What do you make of this transition? Could this be evidence for Hamlet’s madness, or is it something else entirely? Do you think Hamlet believes Ophelia committed suicide?
