A discussion of Polonius's advice to Gertrude in Act 3, Scene 4 of myShakespeare's Hamlet.

myShakespeare | Hamlet 3.4 “be round with him”

[Enter Gertrude and Polonius.]

Polonius

He will come straighstraight. Look you lay home to him.
Tell him his pranks have been too broad to bear with,
And that your grace has screened and stood between
Much heat and him. I'll silence me even here.
Pray you, be round with him.

Hamlet

[off stage] Mother, mother, mother!
Video Transcript:

RALPH: Polonius is once again giving some advice — and this time, it's to Gertrude. He tells Gertrude to be harsh with Hamlet, and let him know he can't keep up with his outrageous behavior.

SARAH: According to Polonius, she should also tell him that the only reason he's not in more trouble with Claudius is that Gertrude has stood up for her son and protected him from Claudius's anger.
