myShakespeare | Hamlet 1.5 Discussion: Adulterous

Hamlet

                                      Oh, my prophetic soul!
Mine uncle?

Ghost

Ay, that incestuous, that adulterous beast,
With witchcraft of his wits, with traitorous gifts —
Oh, wicked wit and gifts that have the power
So to seduce — won to his shameful lust
The will of my most seeming virtuous queen.
Video Transcript:

RALPH: Hamlet had already characterized the relationship between his mother and his uncle as incestuous, but now the ghost adds the accusation of adultery. Is the ghost accusing Claudius of having an affair with Gertrude while he was still alive? What do you think, Sarah?

SARAH: This is getting interesting indeed. Let's talk about this more after the ghost's monologue is complete. At any rate, the ghost certainly targets Claudius as the active pursuer in the relationship between Gertrude and Claudius — she was seduced by Claudius's wit and charms.
