Swearing an oath on a sword as an historical allusion explained in Act 1, Scene 5 of myshakespeare's Hamlet.

It was customary in Shakespeare’s day to swear an oath with your hand on a sword. This was equivalent to swearing an oath with your hand on a bible today since the hilt of the sword resembled a religious crucifix.
