"by Saint Patrick"
Allusion
Act 1,
Scene 5
Lines 140-142

An explanation of the expression “by Saint Patrick” in Act 1, Scene 5 of myShakespeare’s Hamlet.

Hamlet

Yes, by Saint Patrick, but there is, Horatio,
And much offense too. Touching this vision here,
It is an honest ghost, that let me tell you.

“By Saint Patrick” was a mild oath used in Shakespeare’s time. Saint Patrick is the saint of Purgatory, from where the ghost claims to be returning.  The reference takes on another layer of meaning when you consider that, according to legend, Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. Is Hamlet going to drive out Claudius, the "serpent" who killed his father?
