An explanation of “hillo” in Act 1, Scene 5 of myShakespeare’s Hamlet.

Horatio

Hillo, ho, ho, my lord!

Hamlet

Hillo, ho, ho, boy, come, bird come!

“Hillo” is a term from falconry. It was a command used by the falconer when he wanted his trained bird to return. It was also used in other situations, as in the case here, when you wanted someone who was out of sight to come to your voice (e.g. hunters in a thick forest).
