Dig Deeper: Polonius's Suspicion
Act 1,
Scene 3
RALPH: Polonius is immediately suspicious of Hamlet, and quickly comes to the conclusion that Ophelia may not have been acting virtuously enough in her relations with Hamlet.
SARAH: These two aspects to Polonius — his generally suspicious nature, and his tendency to make hasty conclusions — will be seen often as hallmarks of Polonius’s character in this play, and they’ll lead to tragic consequences.
RALPH: Furthermore, these two characteristics of Polonius don’t necessarily sit all that well with his own words to Laertes: remember his advice to never act too hastily, for example.
