"crack the wind"
Metaphor
Act 1,
Scene 3
Lines 105-109

An explanation of the “crack the wind” metaphor in Act 1, Scene 3 of myShakespeare’s Hamlet.

Polonius

Marry, I'll teach you. Think yourself a baby
That you have ta'en these tenders for true pay
Which are not sterling. Tender yourself more dearly,
Or — not to crack the wind of the poor phrase
Running it thus — you'll tender me a fool.

In this metaphor, Polonius continues to make puns on “tender” which is compared to running a horse for so long that it becomes winded.
