An explanation as to why Bernardo thinks Horatio should be the one to speak to the ghost in Act 1, Scene 1 of myshakespeare's Hamlet.

It was believed that spirits would not speak until spoken to, and Bernardo thinks that Horatio should be the one to speak to the ghost since he is educated and speaks some Latin. If it turns out that this is a devilish spirit, it will be necessary to use Latin, the language of the church, to drive it away.
