"interpret between"
Double Entendre
Act 3,
Scene 2
Lines 228-229
Hamlet begins several lines of bawdy wordplay at Ophelia’s expense. A puppet-master was like a chorus in that he interpreted the puppet show by providing dialogue and commentary. In one sense Hamlet is saying that he could manipulate Ophelia like a puppet, but in Shakespeare’s day another sense of “interpret between” a woman and a man was to act as a pimp.
