Scene Summary:

It's a festival day in Rome. As Caesar and others prepare for the festivities, a soothsayer appears and warns Caesar that he must beware the 15th of March. Caesar dismisses him and leaves Brutus and Cassius alone.

Overhearing the crowd, a preoccupied Brutus worries that the Roman people may be trying to crown Caesar king. Cassius, seeing Brutus’ discomfort, explains that he thinks it’s wrong for an ordinary Roman to be valued above others, especially when Brutus is just as great as Caesar. Brutus agrees that things in Rome are headed in a bad direction. Meanwhile, Caesar passes by, returning from addressing the crowd, and confides in Mark Antony that he does not trust Cassius.

Brutus and Cassius catch their friend Casca as he is returning and he explains the commotion they heard from the crowd: Caesar refused an offered crown three times, and then fainted in public. Cassius makes dinner plans with Casca, and agrees to meet Brutus the next day to discuss the situation in Rome. After Brutus leaves, Cassius muses that, since Caesar doesn’t trust him, but loves Brutus, he needs to win Brutus over to his side.
