"deflowered"
Humor
Act 5,
Scene 1
Lines 285-287a
Bottom (as Pyramus)
Bottom should have said that the lion "devoured" Thisbe, but instead he makes a likely unintentional sexual joke by saying that the lion "deflowered" her — that is, he took her virginity. You might think that this sense of the word “deflower” is a fairly recent development, but in fact, it was the original meaning of the word “deflower” when it first appeared, oddly enough, in the first translation of the Bible into English in the 14th century.
