"to couple now"
Humor
Act 4,
Scene 1
Lines 139-141

An explanation of the reference to woodbirds in Act 4, Scene 1 of myShakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Theseus

[To the lovers] Good morrow, friends.
[To his attendants] Saint Valentine is past,
Begin these woodbirds but to couple now?

According to folklore, Valentine's day is when birds “couple” — that is, choose life-long mates. From this belief came our custom of choosing a valentine. Theseus jokes that the four young people appear to have "coupled" up (with the implied sexual innuendo), although Valentine’s day is long past.
