Actors' Scripts
Historical Allusion
Act 3,
Scene 1
Lines 93-94
Quince
In Shakespeare's day the actors' copies of the play were hand written, so it would have been a laborious chore to make a copy of the entire play for each actor. Instead the actors were given a copy of their lines along with the cues for which they were to listen. Here, Quince is criticizing Flute for reading his lines continuously without stopping for the other actors, and for reading his cues along with his lines.
