"roses"
Metaphor
Act 1,
Scene 1
Lines 128-131

An explanation of Lysander’s metaphor reference to the roses in Hermia’s cheeks in Act 1, Scene 1 of myShakspeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Lysander

How now, my love? Why is your cheek so pale?
How chance the roses there do fade so fast?

Hermia

Belike for want of rain, which I could well
Beteem them from the tempest of my eyes.

Hermia's cheeks are like red roses which have faded, but that can't be for lack of water since she's been crying so much.
